Fishing / Watersports

The Tennessee River in North Alabama offers some of the nation's best largemouth bass fishing along with excellent sports fishing for smallmouth bass, sauger, crappie, bream, spotted bass, stripe, and catfish. The Tennessee River presents a mixture of deep drop-offs and shallow banks, narrow tributaries and wide open spaces, flooded timber and wave washed cliffs. Spring and fall are the two best seasons for anglers. The Tennessee River and the Elk River also offers an excellent source for pleasure boating and water skiing!

Located in Northwest Alabama, 2 miles west of Rogersville, off U.S. Highway 72. It is approximately 50 miles east to Huntsville, Alabama and 27 miles west to Florence, Alabama. Interstate 65 at Athens, Alabama is 22 miles east of the park.

Enjoy your early mornings in one of the cabins, listening to the birds, sipping  that first cup of coffee by a campfire, or opening a thermos after you've found the perfect fishing spot.

Stroll along the landscaped banks of Wheeler Lake. You might see deer or an eagle or much more of the wildlife so abundant at Joe Wheeler State Park.

Parks

Site of the original settlement of Athens, Big Spring Park offers a natural spring-fed lake, tennis, playground, pavilion, and picnic area. Big Spring Park is another excellent location for family picnics and get togethers. It's also a great place to "feed the ducks"! 

 Swan Creek Park in Athens is where you can plan your next family picnic! Picnic tables and grills are sprinkled throughout this wooded area along with tennis courts, swings, slides, climbing bars and other fun things. Surrounding Swan Creek Park is a mile and a half walking/running track.


Recreation

Athens Sportsplex

The Athens Sportsplex is one of the best municipal athletic facilities in the United States. It has eight baseball fields and five soccer fields designed for various levels of amateur competition. Located on the grounds of the Athens Sportplex is the popular Kid's Dugout playground complex a place for families to get together and play!

The Athens Parks and Recreation Department oversee area facilities that offer a wide array of diversion for everyone. The department is headquarter at U.S. 31 and Alabama Highway 251 and offers a full size gym for basketball, volleyball and the like, a kitchen and meeting rooms, and two indoor racquetball courts.

This in addition to the already established swimming pool, 15 athletic fields, four playgrounds, the baseball and softball fields and a domino hall.

Organized programs include ballet, youth soccer, aerobic dance, Dixie Youth Baseball, Dixie Boys Baseball, Dixie Majors Baseball, softball for girls, women and men, basketball for boys, girls and men and a swim team!


Golf

Golfers will discover five top courses in Limestone County, the nine hole course at Athens Country Club; the championship, semi-private 18-hole Canebrake at Piney Creek course; and the public 9-hole Woodland, 18-hole Chriswood, and the 18-hole Southern Gayles.
